Coronation Ceremony

The Coronation Ceremony of His Majesty Sultan Ibrahim Ibni Almarhum Sultan Iskandar as the Fifth Sultan of Johor in the modern era was successfully carried out on March 23, 2015. This ceremony continues the royal tradition of Johor that began with the coronation of Sultan Abu Bakar on July 29, 1886, followed by the coronation of Sultan Ibrahim in 1895 and Sultan Ismail on February 10, 1960. Sultan Abu Bakar ascended the throne in 1862 and was crowned 24 years later. This signifies that the coronation ceremony of the Sultan of Johor is a heritage tradition and not based on legal requirements. However, the coronation validates the appointment and strengthens the sovereignty of the Sultan. Article 4 of the Fifth Part of the Regulations for the Administration of the Royal Council, Palace Council, and Religion in 1922 stipulates that the coronation can be held at any time according to the discretion and wishes of the Sultan of Johor after being proclaimed as the Ruler.
The Coronation Ceremony of His Majesty Sultan Ibrahim was conducted exclusively. Among those present were His Majesty the Sultan of Brunei and Her Majesty the Pengiran Isteri, His Majesty the Sultan and Sultanah of Pahang, His Majesty the Sultan and Sultanah of Terengganu, the Chairman of the Council of Regency of Kedah, the Governors of Penang, Melaka, Sabah, and Sarawak, the Prime Minister of Malaysia, Royal Consorts, and state dignitaries. The Coronation Ceremony witnessed a blend of Malay and palace culture, Islamic religious rituals, and Western traditions.
A total of 105 officers and other ranks of JMF, as well as 35 members of the JMF Band, underwent training and rehearsals two weeks before the coronation ceremony.
His Royal Highness received a salute from the honor guard of JMF as soon as his departure from Istana Besar, accompanied by the playing of the Johor state anthem.
The pinnacle of the Coronation Ceremony was when YB Dato’ Mufti of Johor placed the crown on the head of His Royal Highness, accompanied by the playing of the Johor state anthem by the JMF band.
During the departure of Their Majesties from the palace, His Majesty received a salute from the honor guard of JMF, accompanied by the playing of the Johor state anthem. At the same time, His Majesty received a salute from the Malaysian Armed Forces Helicopter. Subsequently, Their Majesties boarded a special vehicle in a procession through the city of Johor Bahru towards Istana Bukit Serene.
The JMF band played the Johor State Anthem as soon as the Royal Mufti completed placing the royal crown on Tuanku's head, followed by the people's cheers of "Daulat Tuanku."
The JMF band played the National Anthem, signifying Tuanku's departure from the ceremony.
The JMF band also played the National Anthem during the arrival and departure of DYMM Tuanku at the tea reception with the people held in ten districts in conjunction with His Majesty's coronation.
