Achievements of JMF
Since its inception, the JMF has recorded success and achievements in various fields, thus enhancing its status as a military force. These accolades are etched for posterity in the glorious history of Johor.
- 1895 – The United States Consul General to the Straits Settlement E. Spencer Pratt, noted that the JMF was smart and soldierly bearing, competent and could hold its own against any European troop. - 1906 – Led by HH Sultan Ibrahim on his magnificent charger, the JMF participated in a ceremonial parade with units of the British Army in Singapore on the occasion of the birthday of the King George Vl of England.

- November 23, 1912 – Commendation by Sir Ian Hamilton, Overseas Inspector General of the British Army, after an inspection of the JMF at a parade in Singapore on the “smartness and soldierly appearance and the efficiency and the smart turn out of the troops.”
(Source – “They Guard the Sultan”, The Singapore Free Press 17 September 1955) - May 11, 1916 – Presentation of JMF Regimental Colours by Sultan Ibrahim at Bukit Timbalan, as part of the 30th anniversary of the JMF witnessed by the Governor of the Straits Settlement. During the ceremony, Sultan Ibrahim was conferred the British Grand Commander of St. Michael and St. George (GCMG).

- 1924 – The JMF was noted for its marksmanship. A JMF team won the inaugural Royal Johor Challenge Cup, a shooting tournament, initiated by Sultan Ibrahim in 1923 as part of his 50th birthday celebrations. The JMF emerged champions for the next seven consecutive years.

Mohamad bin Abdul Jabar of the JMF participated in the All Comers Division of the Junior Kolepone Cup at Bisley, England, where they came in a respectable ninth position and were awarded the King’s Badges for their first-class marksmanship.

- 1936 – The JMF was the first army unit in the Commonwealth to be issued with Braithwaite uniform and equipment; which took ten years of exhaustive experiment in England, and was not yet issued to the British Army. The equipment was named after Major General Sir Walter Braithwaite, who headed the committee that carried out experiments to find the perfect type. The sophisticated uniform and equipment reduced the weight of packs and gears and added comfort and convenience. (Source – “Soldiers Try Their New Uniforms” – The Straits Times 14 June 1936)
- 1936– The JMF was considered one of the best and most equipped infantry in the Far East, with a machine gun section that was equipped with Vickers guns mounted on mono-wheel vehicles suitable for jungle use.

The JMF attacked “with great dash and vigour” after landing near the Changi batteries.
(Singapore Straits Times 1937) - June 23, 1937 – HH Tunku Ismail, Regent of Johor, presented the bronze medals won by the JMF in the .303 Bisley Overseas Postal Match held in 1936. - August 3, 1940 – Raja Ahmad bin Raja Ali, Tengku Abdul Jalil bin Mohd Nor, Yahya bin Yusof, and Ibrahim bin Ahmad of the JMF were the first batch of officers sent for military training at the Indian Military Academy at Dehra Dun. They returned to Johor when the Japanese invaded Malaya. (Source – Tunku Shahriman)
- 1941– JMF cadets Ibrahim Ismail, Ungku Ahmad bin Abdul Rahman and Hussein Onn were sent for military training at the Indian Military Academy at Dehra Dun. They were placed in the Indian Army after their truncated training due to the Japanese invasion of Malaya. (Source – Dato’ Hj. Mohd. Said)
- 1946 – Capt. Abdul Jabar bin Jaafar, Company Sargent Major Othman bin Daud, Corporal Ali bin Awang, Lance Corporal Ahmad bin Abdullah and Private Othman bin Ibrahim were deployed to join the Malaysian Contingent at the Victory Parade marking the end of WW ll in London.
(Source: Dato’ Mohd. Said) - 1983 – HRH Crown Prince Tunku Ibrahim Ismail, the JMF Commanding Officer, formed a windsurfing team and competed in Desaru and Malacca.
(Source: JMF Headquarters) - 1983 – HRH Tunku Ibrahim Ismail, the JMF Commanding Officer, formed a JMF motorcycle escort unit for the Sultan. The unit had 15 1979 Honda CB750K motorcycles and was formed with 13 JMF men, led by an officer, Lt Azman James Moore Abdul Wahid.
(Source: JMF Headquarters) - October 19, 1983 – The JMF team which consisted of PWI Idris Bin Jek, Corporal Abd Fatah Bin A. Samad, Corporal Satimen Bin Selamat dan Corporal Anuar Bin Mahadi won the ATM plate shooting competition after defeating the Brunei Malay Forces. Other teams that took part in the competition are the New Zealand Forces, Australia Armed Forces, Bat 69 PDRM and Singapore Armed Forces.
- August 20, 1986 – Changing of the Colours ceremony was performed by His Majesty Sultan Iskandar at Padang Istana Besar, commemorating 100 years of the establishment of the JMF. (Reference: Commemorative Book 100 Years of JMF 1886-1986)
- April 8, 2008 – HRH Raja Muda Tunku Ismail Ibrahim was appointed parade commander for the JMF guard of honour at his grandfather HM Sultan Iskandar’s birthday ceremony at Istana Besar. (Source: Abdul Rahim Ramli “Sejarah Adat Istiadat Diraja Johor”)
- July 7, 2008 – HRH Raja Muda Tunku Ismail Ibrahim as the Staff Operations Officer, with the blessing of His Majesty Sultan Iskandar, formed and led a special force team of 20 handpicked men known as the JMF Elite, a tactical unit with the capability of immediate deployment and response in case of violence and hostage rescue operations. - November 22, 2010 – DYAM Tunku Mahkota Tunku Ismail was appointed Parade Commander for the JMF guard of honour at the birthday ceremony of HRH Sultan Ibrahim at Istana Besar. His younger brother, HH Lieutenant Tunku Abdul Rahman, was honoured as the Colour Officer at the ceremony. (Source: JMF Headquarters)
- November 17, 2011 – Major General Sultan Ibrahim Ibni Almarhum Sultan Iskandar, as Commandant performed the earth-breaking ceremony of the new Headquarters of the JMF on a 50 hectare site at Jalan Datin Halimah in Johor Bahru. - December 11, 2015 – Launch of the JMF website in conjunction of the JMF’s 130th Anniversary.
- April 8, 2016 – HRH Major General Sultan Ibrahim Ibni Almarhum Sultan Iskandar officiated the opening of the JMF Camp at Tasek Utara Johor Bahru. (Source: JMF Headquarters)
